Happy Dussehra HD images and wallpapers 2016

Dussehra is an important Hindu festival celebrated in a variety of ways in Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh and parts of Pakistan. "Dussehra" is derived from Sanskrit; Dasha-hara is a form of Dashanan ravan ("Ravana's defeat"). Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashami or Ayudhapuja. Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated twenty days after Vijayadashami. Dussehra teaches us that good triumph over evil.

Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of darker fortnight the month of Ashwin according to the Hindu calendar, corresponding to September or October of the Gregorian calendar. The first nine days are celebrated as Navratri, culminating on the tenth day as Dussehra.

On this day Ram (the seventh avatar of Vishnu) killed Ravan, who had abducted Ram's wife Sita to his kingdom Lanka. Ram, his brother Lakshman, their disciple Hanuman and an army fought a battle to rescue Sita as per recorded in the Hindu epic, the Ramayan.
Mahishasur, an asur, grew powerful and wreaked havoc on earth and under his leadership, the asurs defeated the devs. The devs combined into Shakti to kill Mahishasur and from a bolt of lightning emerged from the mouths of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and a young, beautiful female with ten hands appeared. The gods gave her their weapons, and Shakti coalesced to form the goddess Durga. On a lion who assisted her, Durga fought Mahishasur for nine days and nights; on the tenth day, Mahishasur was killed. Thus, Vijayadashami marks the victory of Durga over the demon Mahishasura after a fight of ten days and nine nights. "Vijayadashami" is derived from the Sanskrit vijaya-dashami (victory on the dashami: the tenth day of the Hindu month).
In the age of Dvapar Yug, the pandavs lost to the Kaurav in a dice game and were exiled in the forest for twelve years. The brothers hid their weapons in a hole in a Shami tree before they entered the kingdom of Virat to complete their final year of exile. After that year, on Vijayadashmi they recovered the weapons, declared their true identities and defeated Kauravas, who had attacked King Virat to steal his cattle. Since that day, Shami trees and weapons have been worshipped and the exchange of Shami leaves on Dussehra has been a symbol of good will.

Dussehra is celebrated with enthusiasm across the country. Almost in every town, Ram Lila is staged for several nights. which is enjoyed by thousands of people. On the last day, a grand fair is held in an open ground outside the city where big statues of Ravana, Kumbhkarna and Meghnad are set up. Men, women and children in their gala dresses begin to assemble there two or three hours before sun-set and whole ground hums with life. Children enjoy fun and amusement. People stand in an open circle round the effigies. Towards sunset, fireworks are let off. Then, Rama and Lakshmana come in a chariot. Rama shoots arrows on the statues of Ravana. People set fire on Ravana’s effigy. As these statues catch fire, crackers and shells explode with a deafening sound. Within a few minutes, the statues are reduced to ashes. After this, people return home, but their heart remains filled with courage. The heroic character of Lord Rama inspires them to stand and fight against the evils. Along with Garba, Dandiya is the featured dance of Navratri evenings in Western India.

This year Dussehra falls on Tuesday, October 11.
