India achieved freedom from the clutches of British with a lot of struggle and hardship. It won't have been possible without the visionary leadership of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or simply Mahatma Gandhi. It is his inovative tool called Satyagraha, that he gifted to world a new methodology to fight against injustice, which helped to achieve independence for India with such ease. So a day to remember such a vital character in Indias freedom is worthwhile. So as a tribute to such a legend, his birth anniversary is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti.Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 to a Hindu Modh Baniya family in Porbandar, the small princely state of Porbandar in the Kathiawar Agency of the Indian Empire. Mahatma is also referred as Father of the Nation for the priceless contribution for the country. He led the entire country to freedom from the glitches of slavery. He used the novel tools like Satyagraha (truth), Ahinsa (non-violence) which worked out miracles not only in India but also across the world. He also fought for Harijan welfare, small-scale industries and self-reliance and rehabilitation of lepers. His selfless work and love for the people made him the most trusted personality. Gandhi Ji used to say that be happy in whatever you have as there is no end of desire and if you run behind anything, it will sink you in the sea of uncertainty and darkness. Gandhi ji was also instrumental in setting up the Sabarmati Ashram at Ahmedabad. The United Nations' (UN) International Day of Non-Violence is also held on October 2 each year to coincide with Mahatma Gandhi's birthday.Across India Gandhi Jayanti is a official declared national holiday. It is celebrated accross India with plumb and joy. Gandhiji is remembered and his services is remembered. Three locations in India play important roles in the celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi's birthday. These are:
- The Martyr's Column at the Gandhi Smriti in New Dehli where Mahatma Gandhi was shot on January 30, 1948.
- The Raj Ghat on the banks of the river Yamuna in New Dehli where Mahatma Gandhi's body was cremated on January 31, 1948.
- The Triveni Sangam where the rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati come together near Allahabad.
